2014 NSWGFA Interclub Tournament - Just a Week Away!

Every year, over the last weekend in February and the first weekend in March, the picturesque waterfront town of Port Stephens – just two hour’s drive north of Sydney – is transformed by gamefishermen. For these two magical weekends, a deluge of big and small boats, and often more than a thousand anglers, arrive for the NSW Game Fishing Association’s Interclub Tournament.

This event is widely regarded as the most prestigious and competitive tournament on the Australian gamefishing calendar. The tournament began in the 1950s as a friendly competition between the Sydney gamefishing club and the Newcastle & Port Stephens gamefishing club. From its humble start, the event soon expanded and became the Interclub in 1963. This transformed it into a battle for supremacy between all the gamefishing clubs within the state, with outsiders also invited as visitors. It’s become the largest tournament of its kind in the southern hemisphere and one of the largest in the world, attracting gamefishing anglers from around the country and overseas.

The rich waters of Port Stephens are in peak season at this time of year, and usually the teams find excellent fishing for small black marlin in close, amazing numbers of striped marlin out near the continental shelf drop-off, and blue marlin beyond that. It is also a mecca for shark anglers, as the region frequently produces some of the world’s best fishing for enormous tiger and mako sharks. Many world records have been set in these waters, and many times the biggest fish caught for the year will have been landed during this event.

The Interclub is a fiercely contested battle between friendly rivals, an annual get-together with distant mates, as well as an opportunity to fish some of the State’s best waters in peak season. No wonder that anglers look forward to it all year.

Famed tackle manufacturer PENN is again proud to be a major sponsor of this tournament and have provided special International reels for major prizes in this year’s tournament. Each has been specifically customised for the Interclub through their PENN Customshop.

PENN Australia will showcase their customisable reels and other gamefishing products at the Bluewater Expo, run in conjunction with the Interclub. Both competitors and the general public are welcome. Visit the Bluewater Expo within the Nelson Bay Wests club from 11am to 8pm on Friday 22 Feb, and 10am to 5pm on Saturday 23 February.
